Under the able editorship of John Falk, essays by different individual authors discuss the absorption of scientific information from such sources as early childhood TV viewing, the value of infrastructure in free-choice science learning, and much more. High-level social and educational issues are thoroughly explored in this intriguing, insightful, thought provoking title.

Freedom: A Photographic History of the African American Struggle
Published in Hardcover by Phaidon Press Inc. (October, 2002)
Authors: Manning Marable, Leith Mullings, and Sophie Spencer-Wood
Average review score:

Freedom:Photographic History/African American Struggle
This book is a gorgeous coffee-table volume. It is divided into sections by time periods beginning in the 1840s and continues to the present. Each chapter is introduced with an in-depth discussion of what was happening at that time, then moves to captioned photos. The book is large, 10"x12", and is presented on heavy, high quality paper; a pleasure to hold and look at! My only criticism is that readability was sacrificed for design. The type is very small and, therefore, difficult to read, and the caption reference number below each photo is mircoscopic. Also, even though I'm sure the photos were reproduced perfectly, some are hard to make out (what do I expect for 100+ year old photos!) I recommend this book whether you are interested in this subject, interested in photography or just love beautiful books.

The Frog Run: Words and Wildness in the Vermont Woods
Published in Paperback by Milkweed Editions (09 January, 2002)
Author: John Elder
Average review score:

Celebration in the Vermont Wilds
John Elder, in this Credo Series book, intertwines observations of his three loves of - literature, nature and his family - into a celebration of life itself.

The book's title marks the moment between winter and spring when the tree frogs commence croaking, warning of the last maple tree sap good for distilling into syrup. The Credo Series offers contemporary American writers an opportunity to discuss the fluid and subtle issues of a world in constant change. Elder offers a message of hope; a hope grounded his lineage, literature and the land; how he found balance building a sugarhouse with his sons in the Vermont Woods.

My favorite essay in the collection is "Starting with the Psalms: A Reader's History" where he weaves memories of the 23rd Psalm into a discussion of John Milton's Paradise Lost with a little Annie Dillard, Robert Frost and Gary Snyder thrown in to season the discussion. Grounded in his experience as a professor and writer living in the Green Mountains of Vermont, Elder connects literature with the landscape that inspired it.

Elder is a treasure; a man who seamlessly weaves the dots of his existence into a portrait that honors his observations of his place on earth.

From Poppa
Published in Hardcover by Lobster Press (30 September, 1999)
Authors: Anne Carter and Kasia Charko
Average review score:

A wistful and gentle tale of family
From Poppa is an enjoyable full color children's picture book for young readers who can effortlessly handle easy reader books and are ready for a slightly more detailed story. The heartwarming color illustrations by Kasia Charko wonderfully enhance Anne Carter's story of a young girl and her beloved grandfather who teaches her how to create a lifelike wooden duck over the course of a winter. A wistful and gentle tale of family, From Poppa is highly recommended for family, school, and community library picture book collections.

From the Outer Court to the Inner Sanctum
Published in Paperback by Theosophical Publishing House (May, 1983)
Authors: Annie Wood Besant and Shirley Nicholson
Average review score:

Highly recommended for the beginning esoteric seeker.
This book is well written and concise. Annie Besant was a noted orator of the late Victorian age. A high level overview of the concepts of the esoteric worldview are presented clearly through the use of analogy and direct language. The book covers the areas of purification, thought control, the building of character, spiritual alchemy, and the threshold of the Temple - the latter being of interest but little relevence to we mere mortals

From Wood to Ridge: Collected Poems in Gaelic and English
Published in Hardcover by Carcanet Press Ltd (January, 1990)
Authors: Sorley MacLean and Somhairle Macgill-Eain
Average review score:

Britain's least known big league poet
I read the translation of this book and sorely wanted to learn Gaelic. You can see that the rythmn of the language is much better in the original, even if you do not understand what it means. Sorley must be the most underrated British poet of the 20th century, mainly because he wrote in Scots Gaelic. The translations are so good one wonders what the originals are like. Anyway, Sorley is one of the finest nature poets I have ever read.

Frommer's Wonderful Weekends from Boston (Frommer's Wonderful Weekends)
Published in Paperback by Hungry Minds, Inc (01 October, 1998)
Author: Marilyn Wood
Average review score:

Stands out among New England B&B Books
Among the MANY B&B guides to the Northeast, I found this one the most helpful for deciding where to go from Boston. Helfpul facts include travel times to the destinations, Nantucket vs. Martha's Vineyard, and other off-the beaten track locales (outside of Massachusetts). The book has helpful editorial, but more meaty that the general "quaint inn, hospitable couple serves muffins".

A Gathering of Dragons

Published in Hardcover by Harry N Abrams (September, 2001)
Authors: Britt Salvesen, Douglas W. Druick, Peter Kort Zegers, Paul Gauguin, Art Institute of Chicago, and James N. Wood
Average review score:

Lush, colorful artworks revolutionizing modern painting
Paul Gauguin was at the heart of the Post-Impressionist movement with his lush, colorful artworks revolutionizing modern painting a the turn of the 19th Century. Largely self-taught in a diversity of media including oil painting, printmaking, and ceramics, Gauguin came to his career as a Parisian artist relatively late in life, and went on to paint subjects drawn from where he would live ranging from Brittany and Martinique, to Tahiti, and the Marquesas islands. In Gauguin, art expert Britt Salvesen drew from research developed by Douglas W. Druick and Peter Kort Zegers, enhanced with 79 superbly presented illustrations of which 52 are in color and 27 are duotone. Gauguin is a very highly recommended addition to personal, academic, and community library art history reading lists and reference collections in general, as well as being strongly commended to students of the life and work of Paul Gauguin in particular.
